Election 08 Workshops
These four suggested workshops can be used as guides to get your creative energies flowing. You know best the issues and concerns of your local community or organization. Don’t hesitate to contact NETWORK Education Program Coordinator Sara Dwyer, ASC (sdwyer@networklobby.org or 202-347-9797, ext. 209) and say, “What we really want, need or hoped for is…”
Especially during this Election Year 2008, we will work with you to foster conversation and critical analysis of the issues and campaigns as they relate to NETWORK’s mission, vision and values. We are more than willing to assist in designing and engaging in Election 2008 presentations, seminars or workshops
Workshop Descriptions
Voter Education—Explores civic engagement in the political process
- This workshop will engage participants in a basic review of the history of our election process and Catholic Social Tradition; consider various descriptions of civic engagement; and review basic skills for legislative advocacy and analysis of candidates and issues. The workshop presents ideas on how to host a voter registration drive, how to participate in local election activities, and how to hold elected officials accountable. There is power released in people when vision and values come together. Tapping into that power is the goal of this workshop!
We Hold These Truths—Incorporates principles for a just and equitable society
- We hear and say these words, but we understand and mean different things. Our time will focus on the following concepts, or others put forth by the group: common good, democracy, the role of good government, Catholic Social Tradition, and change. The processes of the workshop are both interactive and reflective. If we understand r esponsible citizenship as a virtue and participation in the political process as a moral obligation, then we must engage in the political realities of our time in order to build a just and equitable society.
Just-Us for Justice Reflection Day—Integrates Catholic Social Tradition and Scripture
- The ‘day’ can be as long or short as desired. The particular justice themes can be gleaned from Scriptures of the liturgical season or other Scriptures. There is a blending of prayer, commentary/presentation, reflection and faith sharing. The formats are inclusive of various spiritualities and rituals. Integrating aspects of citizenship and discipleship roles and responsibilities, ‘walking-the-talk’ in our ordinary lives, is the context. Deepening our own spiritual truth is the focus. This is an especially positive event for those directly involved in social justice ministries.
Election Workshop In-A-Box—Create your own workshop
- Use your creativity and address the critical issues, needs, hopes and dreams of your local community. Whether the workshop focuses specifically on the 2008 elections or some aspect of social justice ministry doesn’t matter. We will work with you to create the best event for you!
